Four explosions were recorded on Thursday and one on Friday in Russian territorial waters in the Gulf of Finland
Finnish seismologists detect five undersea explosions in Russian territorial waters in the Baltic Sea last week, the Institute of Seismology at the University of Helsinki announced today.
“We detected five explosions, the largest of which was 1.8 magnitude and the smallest 1.3,” said the director of the institute Timo Tiira in Reutersreferring to the Richter scale used to describe the intensity of seismic activity.
Four explosions were recorded on Thursday and one on Friday in Russian territorial waters in the Gulf of Finland, Tiira noted, adding that it was clear that these were explosions and not seismic activity.
“This can be seen from the shape of the signal and its frequency content,” he explained.
The institute does not know what caused the explosions, but noted that similar disturbances had been detected during naval training and seabed mining, according to Tiira.
“We have detected eruptions in the same area in the past, but not very often, not even every year,” he said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet been available to comment on this news.
