Russia is now trying to recruit Afghan commandos to fight in Ukraine according to reports.

Members of the Afghan National Army Commando Corps – who were trained by the UK and the US – are reported to have offers to join the Russian military.

Multiple Afghan military and security sources told Foreign Policy magazine that the addition of the commandos could to have a big impact on the battlefield. About 20,000 to 30,000 commandos were abandoned when the West withdrew from Afghanistan last year.

Only a small number were able to flee Afghanistan when democracy collapsed, while others fled to trusted neighbors or went into hiding to avoid capture and execution by the Taliban.

Many of these commandos are now without work or hope, while some are still awaiting resettlement in the UK or US.

Afghan security sources told the media that this could easily attract them to Russian recruiters. A source said characteristically: “They have no country, no job, no future. They have nothing to lose.”

Some sources reported that up to 10,000 former commandos they could accept such offers through social networks WhatsApp and Signal.
