Italy: Financial police investigation against Pfizer for tax evasion

A representative of the multinational pharmaceutical industry, Pam Isele, assured yesterday evening that “Pfizer respects the rules and laws of Italy” and that “these are simple checks”.

Italian financial police are investigating possible tax evasion by pharmaceutical company Pfizer, according to media reports.

The news, which was first reported by the American news agency Bloomberg, has a special prominence in the Italian media.

Silvio Berlusconi’s news group reports that this is an investigation that is being carried out in cooperation with tax officials and that there are suspicions that Pfizer may have channeled profits of 1.2 billion euros to its subsidiaries in the USA, in order not to pay the corresponding taxes to the Italy.

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, however, there is still nothing official from the Italian authorities; the investigation is set to continue in the coming days.
