Dissatisfaction among workers is steadily rising as wages lag behind rising commodity prices
Britain’s biggest trade union has said it is calling 350,000 NHS workers to the polls over strike action over pay demands this winter, in a move that highlights the challenges facing new prime minister Rishi Sunak.
Unison, which has more than 1.3 million members according to its website, said today that the most pressing issue for Sunak and Health Secretary Steve Barclay is “without doubt finding a solution to the many problems affecting the NHS’.
“The NHS is losing experienced staff at an alarming rate. Health workers are leaving for better paying jobs that don’t affect them and their families as much,” Unison general secretary Christina McAnia said in a statement.
THE discontent among workers steadily rises as wages lag against rising prices of basic goods, from food to fuel, leading workers from various industries to go on strike.
Pressures on the health system are one of the major problems inherited by Mr Sunack, who in his first speech as prime minister promised a “stronger NHS”.
Unison, which is calling for health workers across the country to the polls, said strikes were “not something that cannot be avoided”.
