The governments of the United States, Mexico and several other countries in the region will coordinate to dismantle the human trafficking network responsible for the car accident that claimed the lives of dozens of people on Thursday in the Mexican state of Chiapas, the US embassy in Mexico announced Saturday. .
A press release from the embassy states that a special task force will be set up to investigate, identify and arrest the traffickers responsible for this tragedy.
A truck loaded with more than 160 people was overturned on Thursday near Tustla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas state. At least 55 of the passengers, most of them Guatemalans, were killed and dozens more were injured. Guatemala has declared three days of national mourning.
The United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic will participate in the project, although all countries in the region are welcome to participate, according to a statement from the US embassy.
“We are committed to jointly enforcing the full weight of the law on those responsible” and to “work in a coordinated manner to combat trafficking and human trafficking in all its manifestations,” it said.
Thousands of migrants fleeing their homeland to escape the misery and violence of gangs are spending the last few years in Mexico trying to reach the United States. Traveling is often dangerous. In many cases, they board the “coyotes”, as they are called, the trucks in which the traffickers load the migrants.
The Guatemalan government on Friday urged the United States to invest in the country and other Central American countries to boost growth and reduce migration flows.
