Stoltenberg had announced on Wednesday that he would visit Turkey “soon”.

The Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg he will meet on November 4 with the president of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in order to discuss Ankara’s ratification of its accession Sweden and Finland in the alliance, a senior Turkish official said today.

“The NATO secretary general will come on November 4,” said the source, who asked to remain anonymous. He added that Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson will be received by Erdogan on November 8.

Stoltenberg had announced on Wednesday that he would visit Turkey “soon”.

A spokesman for Christerson when asked about the matter would not confirm the date of the Swedish prime minister’s visit to Ankara, commenting only that his colleagues are “working on this issue”.

To date, 28 of NATO’s 30 member countries have ratified Sweden and Finland’s accession, which would have to be approved unanimously. Only Hungary and Turkey have not proceeded with ratification.

Erdogan has threatened since May to block the two countries’ membership, accusing them of harboring Kurdish fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara considers terrorist groups.

Last week the Turkish president again warned that the Turkish parliament would not ratify membership until Turkey’s demands were met.
