According to the indictment he killed her because he refused to give her £200,000 to renovate her dilapidated house
An Australian woman was sentenced to life in prison today for the brutal murder of her friend, with the court’s verdict broadcast live on television, an extremely rare occurrence for British justice.
THE Gemma Mitchell, 38, was found guilty of the June 2021 murder of 67-year-old Deborah Chong. Two weeks after the murder Mitchell drove a distance of 200 miles from London to the south west of England and threw the decapitated corpse into the forest.
The court today sentenced her to life imprisonment with the right to suspend the sentence after 34 years.
According to the indictment, Mitchell developed a friendly relationship with Chong after becoming a member of the same parish as her. He killed her because she refused to give her 200,000 pounds to renovate her dilapidated house. He then wrote a forged will to inherit Chong’s fortune of around £700,000.
When Chong disappeared, Mitchell initially said she had gone to visit her family “somewhere near the sea”. In fact, she had beheaded her and hid the body in her garden.
Judge Richard Marks noted that Gemma Mitchell had shown no remorse for the “deeply shocking” crime. She was completely speechless when the verdict was announced, while the victim’s family watched via video link from Malaysia.
It is only the second time a British criminal court trial has been allowed to be broadcast live.
