Rock ‘n’ roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis has died at the age of 87, according to his agent.

Lewis’ great performances on songs such as “Great Balls of Fire” helped establish rock’n’roll music as the dominant American pop music of the 1950s.

The death comes two days after media reports that he had “passed away” were denied.

Jerry Lee Lewis was born in Louisiana in 1935, the son of a poor farm family who mortgaged their home to buy Lewis his first piano. While learning the instrument and studying at an evangelical school, he was kicked out for performing a boogie-woogie version of “My God is Real” that was considered profane.

Then he didn’t go back to the desks and started playing live. His first public performance was at the age of 14 at the opening of a car dealership.

In 1956 Lewis made his first recordings at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee. His song “Crazy Arms” sold 300,000 copies, while in 1957 his hit “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” made Lewis a world name, establishing him on the rock and roll scene of the time. The also big hits “Great Balls of Fire”, “Breathless” and “High School Confidential” followed. He also participated from 1956 in the famous “Million Dollar Quartet”, together with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, a great moment in the history of Rock and Roll. Lewis also became known for the great energy he displayed on stage, making intense movements on stage.

In 1958, Lewis’ career suffered a major blow when it was revealed to the public that he had married his 13-year-old cousin. This fact caused a lot of damage to his reputation, as a result of which his presence in the rock and roll music scene decreased. In the early 1960s, Lewis had no major hits. In 1964, however, his album “Live at the Star Club” was a big hit and was considered by critics to be one of the best in the history of rock music. [12] [13]. On this album Lewis had one of the most explosive stage presences.

In 1968, Lewis turned to country music, where he had hits such as the song “Another Place, Another Time” In 2006, Lewis released his album “Last Man Standing”, which sold over a million copies, becoming the most successful of the album and in 2010 the album “Mean Old Man”, which was also successful.

Lewis has won numerous awards in Rock and Country music. He was ranked 24th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. He was one of the last surviving artists of the first birth period of Rock music.
