The non-governmental organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that Iranian security forces fired today at protesters in Zahedan

One person was killed by gunfire of “unknown origin” and 14 others, including members of the security forces, were injured during “riots” that broke out today in the city of Zahedan, a city in southeastern Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province, according to state media.

“As a result of today’s unrest in Zahedan, one civilian died as a result of gunfire from unknown sources and 14 people, including members of the security forces, were injured,” the Irna news agency reported, citing the province’s Security Council.

Footage on social media showed security forces firing into crowds, four weeks after dozens were killed in protests there over allegations of the rape of a teenage girl by a senior police officer.

Earlier the non-governmental organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), reported that Iranian security forces fired on protesters today in Zahedan, a month after the riots that claimed the lives of dozens of people in that city.

“Special police forces suppressed the demonstration and fired on the crowd” gathered after Friday prayers in Zahedan, HRANA tweeted.

On September 30, riots broke out in the city during demonstrations protesting the rape of a young girl by a police officer. According to the NGO Iran Human Rights, at least 93 people were killed.

In the Zahedan, the most violent episodes have broken out so far. The protests in the city erupted in part over a rape complaint against a senior police officer, which, combined with protests over the death of 22-year-old Mahsha Amini in September, have sparked massive protests in the area.

Weeks after Amini’s death, women continue to remove their hijabs during street protests as international pressure mounts on Iran’s government to crack down on the protesters.
