G7 warnings to Russia: ‘Massive consequences’ if it attacks Ukraine

by

The G7 foreign ministers of the more developed industrialized nations warned Russia today that it would face “massive consequences” if President Vladimir Putin attacked Ukraine, according to a draft statement seen by Reuters.

At a meeting in Liverpool, northern England, G7 delegates said they condemned Russia’s military development near Ukraine and called on Moscow to escalate the situation.

“Russia should have no doubt that further military action against Ukraine will have massive consequences and high costs,” the draft statement said, G7 sources confirmed.

Ukraine is at the center of a crisis in East-West relations as it accuses Russia of mobilizing tens of thousands of troops in preparation for a possible large-scale military strike.

Russia has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia and its allies have been made more than once.

The G7 includes Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States, and is also represented by a representative of the European Union.

According to the British minister, the Liverpool summit showed “the very united voice of the G7 countries, which represent 50% of world GDP and are very clear” about the fact that “there will be massive consequences for Russia in case invasion of Ukraine “.

The threat of unprecedented sanctions has been voiced in recent days by Washington, and in particular by President Joe Biden, who spoke with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Putin wants to meet Biden up close

Russian President Vladimir Putin told his US counterpart Joe Biden when they spoke via video conference earlier this month that he “really wanted” to meet him up close, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said today, according to the Russian news agency RIA .

However, Putin has no particular reason to be optimistic after his conversation with Biden because there are still very serious differences of opinion between Russia and the United States, Peshkov said, according to RIA.
