Violence in the West Bank, between territories where Palestinians seek statehood, has escalated since Israeli forces began a crackdown in March in response to a series of attacks by Palestinians inside Israel.
A Palestinian gunman killed one person and wounded at least three others in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank before being shot dead by a guard, the Israeli military, medics and a settlement spokesman said.
Palestinian authorities in Hebron had no immediate comment.
Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right politician from the settlement whose Religious Zionist party is projected to come third in next Tuesday’s Israeli parliamentary elections, claimed that his home in Hebron was the target of the attack.
Israeli security forces did not confirm his claim, and Israeli media, citing security sources, said Ben-Gvir’s home was not targeted.
“I say to these terrorists, if they think that the threats, the assassination attempt will discourage me – it will not help you. I am moving forward,” the far-right politician told Israel’s Channel 12 television.
Violence in the West Bank, between territories where Palestinians seek statehood, has escalated since Israeli forces began a crackdown in March in response to a series of attacks by Palestinians inside Israel.
A settlement spokesman said four Jews were wounded in the shooting near a checkpoint in Hebron, where hundreds of settlers live among 200,000 Palestinians.
One of those victims, a middle-aged man, was later pronounced dead. It was not immediately clear if he had Israeli citizenship.
Israel’s first aid agency Magen David Adom reported that a Palestinian was also slightly injured in the incident.
The Palestinian Red Crescent First Aid Service said one of its crew members in Hebron was hit in the shoulder by Israeli fire. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the report.
