Another tragedy of people being trampled occurred on Saturday, in an overcrowded stadium in Kinshasa, where well-known Congolese singer Fali Ipupa was performing.

Specifically, eleven people, including two policemen, died most of them from suffocation. Another seven were injured, Interior Minister Aselo Okito said.

The Stadium of Martyrs is at capacity 80,000 spectators, but they were overcrowded. Some of the spectators forced their way into the seats of the officials, reported Reuters journalists who were present at the venue.

Earlier, security forces had fired tear gas to disperse the crowd in the streets outside the stadium, where thousands of people had gathered for the concert.

Ipupa was born in Kinshasa but is famous not only in DR Congo but also in Europe and elsewhere.

The number of spectators inside the stadium far exceeded what the police and private security company personnel could control.

The new tragedy comes at the same time as the tragedy in Seoul where 153 people died and 134 were injured in a stampede at a Halloween party.
