Strong protest against Dutch ambassador – Moscow claims British agent tried to recruit Russian military attaché Oct. 20 in The Hague
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today that it has summoned the Dutch ambassador to Moscow to “strongly protest” attempts to “recruit” Russian diplomats in the Netherlands by Western intelligence agencies.
The Dutch ambassador in Moscow, Gilles Besur Plueg, was “summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 31,” the Russian embassy said in a statement.
During this meeting, Moscow “strongly protested an attempt to recruit the military attaché of the Russian embassy in Hague on October 20 by a representative of the British intelligence services,” according to the same source.
“Such provocative actions are unacceptable (…) and hinder the smooth operation of Russian bodies abroad”the announcement states.
According to Russian diplomacy, several similar “provocations” by Western special services against Russian diplomats have taken place in the Netherlands in recent years.
In December 2018, CIA representatives tried to recruit a diplomat from the Russian mission to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons “in a park”. In December 2019, they tried to “promote cooperation” with an attaché of the Russian embassy in the Netherlands “in a private area of Schiphol Airport” in Amsterdam, the statement said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry accuses her Netherlands that “not only did he not prevent these illegal acts, but he participated in them.”
Therefore, “in April members of the Dutch special services attempted to recruit three Russian diplomats who had earlier been declared persona non grata.” In July 2020 in The Hague, “surveillance equipment was discovered in the car of a diplomat of the Russian embassy”, adds the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Moscow calls on “the Dutch authorities to refrain from these hostile actions that lead to further deterioration of bilateral relations” and calls for “comprehensive measures aimed at preventing such incidents in the future”.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked a wave of international condemnation and a barrage of sanctions accompanied by the expulsion of hundreds of Russian diplomats from Western countries.
In some cases, these deportations were accompanied by accusations of espionage.
Moscow has pledged to respond to each of these measures, and dozens of Western diplomats have already been expelled from Russia.
