Nelson de Sá: Chinese media already projects Lula’s Brazil in the Belt and Road Initiative

by

Xinhua Agency, portals and the Financial Times, among others, report the offer to Lula made by Xi Jinping, also on his way to a third term, to take bilateral relations “to a new level”, in the expression used by the Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, Zhao Lijian.

At Xinhua, “Xi said he attaches great importance to the development of China-Brazil relations and stands ready to work with Lula to jointly plan and elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership to a higher level.”

Financial 21 Shiji Jingji Baodao, linked to Nanfang, one of the most dynamic newspapers in the PC, asked Chinese analysts “what is the outlook for the Brazilian economy and China-Brazil relations” now.

Quoting Zhou Zhiwei, Bu Shaohua and Sun Yanfeng, Latin American experts at Beijing think tanks, he ventures that in trade “Brazil will further explore the potential global market, especially the Asia-Pacific market.”

“All the experts interviewed believe that, during Lula’s term, Brazil is more likely to join the Belt and Road Initiative,” he adds, regarding the infrastructure program.

“Based on China’s advantages in technology and capital, as well as Brazil’s own resource advantages and needs, the two countries are expected to carry out deeper cooperation in infrastructure and new energy,” Bu said.

The Global Times, linked to Renmin Ribao or Diário do Povo, the party’s official organ, followed the same line, hearing from Zhou that Brazil “may seek to participate in the Initiative under Lula.” He underlines that Argentina announced its entry into the program this year.

In an editorial (pictured above), the newspaper details Beijing’s vision:

“The complementarity between the two countries is witnessing a remarkable growth, becoming the backbone of bilateral ties. The deepening of China-Brazil relations follows the trend and has a great internal driving force. It will not be easily changed. Although there have been some noises under Bolsonaro , trade reached a record US$ 164 billion in 2021, despite the pandemic. In recent years, Washington has gone to the extreme to squeeze the disharmonious factors in China-Brazil relations and amplify them, but, as everyone sees, there was no desired effect.

“The exchanges between China and Brazil have never been demarcated by ideology. No matter who is in power, we would like to see the stability and development of Brazilian society. Meanwhile, as both are important emerging countries, they share broad interests and responsibilities. Lula wrote in government plan: we defend working for the construction of a new global order committed to multilateralism, respect for the sovereignty of nations, peace, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, which considers the needs of developing countries. commonalities with the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative that China has proposed.”
