Facing federal charges of assault and attempted kidnapping is 42-year-old David dePape according to the US Department of Justice who broke into Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home in the early hours of last Friday and attacked her husband, Paul, with a hammer.
While San Francisco prosecutors have yet to announce charges against dePape, federal charges are still a possibility because of early evidence that suggests the suspect appeared to have a motive for the home invasion, sources told ABC News.
According to what became public, the attacker had planned the invasion of Pelosi’s house, with the aim of “holding her hostage and breaking her kneecaps” in case she “lied to him”.
DePape has been remanded in custody and is expected to face charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and elder abuse, authorities said.
According to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott the attack on Pelosi’s home was deliberate, describing a chaotic scene at the home once police arrived.
