Prince of Saudi Arabia congratulates Lula on victory in elections

by

The Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, congratulated President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for his victory at the polls last Sunday (30).

According to a statement published by the official profile of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MbS -as the prince is known- “expressed sincere congratulations to the elected president, wishing him every success, and to the government and friendly people of Brazil, steady progress and prosperity. .”

The Saudi joins, therefore, a series of heads of state and government who have recognized Lula’s electoral victory, despite the silence of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who has not yet publicly commented on his opponent’s success at the polls. .

MbS’s greeting also adds a bitter touch to Bolsonaro’s defeat, as the current president presented his good relationship with the Arab countries as one of the strengths of his foreign policy.

The contact with the Saudi prince, with whom Bolsonaro said he had “a certain affinity” during a trip to the Middle East in 2019, is the target of criticism due to a series of allegations of human rights violations against MbS, suspected of having ordered the journalist’s murder.
