After his arrest, police found evidence that he planned to assassinate the then leader of the Center Party, Ani Leif, who was near the scene of the attack.
A 33-year-old Swede who last July murdered a well-known psychiatrist and planned to kill the leader of a political party has been charged with “terrorism” and “preparation of a terrorist crime”.
Theodor Engström was arrested in the summer after stabbing to death well-known Swedish psychiatrist Ing-Marie Visselgren, 64, in Visby on the island of Gotland, where the Almendalen political festival, which is attended annually by almost all of the country’s top politicians, was taking place.
After his arrest, police found evidence that he planned to assassinate the then leader of the Center Party, Ani Leif, who was near the scene of the attack.
Engstrom confessed to the crime.
From the psychiatric examination ordered by the court it was found that he is suffering from psychological problems.
According to the indictment, Wieselgren’s murder is considered a “terrorist act” as it was designed “to cause fear in the population or part of the population.” The same goes for planning the assassination or attack on Leef.
A few weeks before his arrest the accused bought a double-edged knife, two swords and a bow with arrows. He had detailed information on the program the two women would follow during the week-long festival.
Swedish media reported that Engström had connections to the NMR, a neo-Nazi Scandinavian organization.
The trial is set to begin on November 8 and last two weeks.
Leaf resigned as leader of the Center party in September.
