Ecuador: Policeman killed, colleague injured in rifle attack

A police officer was killed and a colleague was injured in a “rifle attack” yesterday Sunday against a police station in the province of Esmeralda, in the northwestern part of Ecuador, a short distance from the border with Colombia, police said, adding that nine people were arrested in the carried out for the case.

“The (…) Ecuadorian police condemn this attack,” he said in a press release, adding that the target was a municipal police unit in La Guatzaraca, south of Esmeralda, the capital of the province.

Nine people were arrested in six police raids after the attack, including the alleged perpetrator of the attack, the police statement added, which did not go into details.

The prosecutor’s office announced that “accusations” were to be made “within the next few hours” against the nine “suspects in the attack” via Twitter.

An automatic weapon and a revolver were confiscated. Police uploaded snapshots of broken glass at the entrance to the police station and bullet holes in a police station window on social networking sites.

Esmeralda is one of the nine provinces in Ecuador where a state of emergency has been declared by Conservative President Guillermo Lasso on October 18 due to rising drug-related crime.
