Nicaragua: After receiving severance ties with Taiwan, the country receives coronavirus vaccines from China

by

200,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by the Chinese drug industry Sinopharm arrived in Nicaragua on Sunday, three days after Managua announced that it was severing diplomatic relations with Taiwan and recognizing it, provoking a strong US reaction.

The Nicaraguan delegation that visited China to formalize relations with Beijing, led by Rafael and Laureano Ortega, sons of President Daniel Ortega, returned to Managua on an official Air China flight.

According to their information, another 800,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine are expected to be delivered to the country in the coming days.

Laureano Ortega said that during his visit to China, various co-operation plans were discussed and meetings were held with officials in charge of trade and international co-operation.

This shift in diplomacy came amid a continuing escalation of tensions between the United States and China, especially over Taiwan, an island that has had its own government and political system since 1949, but Beijing has always considered of his territory, an insurgent Chinese province destined to be reunited with the mainland in the future, by force if necessary.

It also came amid stepping up sanctions and travel restrictions by Washington against the Ortega government. Mr Ortega was re-elected in November for a fourth consecutive term without a candidate, as most of his potential opponents in the presidential election have been arrested and jailed in recent months.
