The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak announced that it will finally move to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt next week for the major international climate change summit COP27.

In doing so, he reverses the original decision to abstain, a decision that had been strongly criticized by the British opposition, but also by the representative of the British government at the climate summits, Alok Sharma.

Pressure on Mr Sunak to attend had intensified after the former prime minister’s confirmation to Sky News yesterday Boris Johnson that it will be in the Egyptian resort. Under Mr Johnson’s leadership the UK hosted COP26 in Glasgow last year.

“There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investment in renewable energy. This is why I will be attending COP27 next week: to deliver on Glasgow’s legacy of building a safe and sustainable future,” the British Prime Minister tweeted.

Initially, Downing Street had justified the decision to absent Mr Sunak from the meeting by citing workload ahead of the crucial budget which will be presented on 17 November.

Today, the prime minister’s office reported that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance have made “good progress” on drafting the budget.

The opposition commented that the Prime Minister obliged “embarrassed” to review and that he had to be “dragged kicking and screaming” to do the right thing.
