And I am very happy to announce that today the Initiative has reached a new milestone,” Antonio Guterres told reporters. “To date they have been exported through the Black Sea corridor 10 million tons of cereals and other food“, he added.

Noting that Russia’s withdrawal from the Initiative earlier this week had pushed prices higher and made the world aware of the importance of this agreement, Guterres stressed that it was a “collective responsibility to continue its implementation” so that ” reduce the risk of hunger, poverty and instability”.

“I call on all sides to focus their efforts on two areas: First, the renewal and full implementation of the Black Sea Initiative,” which runs until November 19. “And secondly, to remove the barriers that still exist for Russian food and fertilizer exports.”

Guterres insisted that “the world needs concerted efforts to urgently address the critical situation in the fertilizer market,” stressing that “fertilizer shortages are already affecting farmers around the world” and this shortage must not turn into a “food shortage.” .
