Ukraine and Russia exchanged 214 prisoners

Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that Ukraine had freed 107 Russian soldiers and that they would be transferred to Moscow for “necessary medical and psychological assistance.”

Russia and Ukraine exchanged 214 military prisoners of war today in the latest in a series of prisoner swaps, with many of the Ukrainians wounded survivors of a failed attempt to defend the city of Mariupol in April and May.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that Ukraine had freed 107 Russian soldiers and that they would be transferred to Moscow for “necessary medical and psychological assistance.”

Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian presidential chief of staff, said Russia had freed 107 Ukrainian fighters, including 74 who had defended the Azovstal steelworks, the scene of the latest Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol.

“We managed to exchange seriously wounded and lying down (fighters) from Mariupol, from Azovstal”, boys with shrapnel wounds in the arms and legs, gunshot wounds in various parts of the body. There are people with amputated legs and (those) who cannot feel part of their face, (others) with infected wounds.”
