Grégoire de Furnas shouted ‘go back to Africa’ at left-wing MP – He wasn’t referring to Carlos Marten Bilongo, but immigrants, far-right party ‘clarifies’
France’s lower house disrupted its session today after a far-right lawmaker shouted “Go back to Africa” at a black left-wing colleague who had asked a question about immigration.
This “prompt” caused a great stir. The government and the left alliance called it an unacceptable, racist insult. The extreme right on the other hand argued that the deputy Grégoire de Fournas it was not addressed to the deputy commissioner, Mr Carlos Martin Bilongobut to migrants who are on a non-governmental organization ship and are looking for a “safe port” to disembark.
“There is no place for racism in our democracy. The Bureau of the National Assembly will meet (on Friday) and decide on sanctions,” Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne told reporters.
De Furnas is a member of Marine Le Pen’s National Alarm and his party claimed he had said nothing wrong. “Obviously he was talking about the migrants being transported on NGO ships,” Le Pen tweeted. “The confrontation caused by our political opponents (…) will not deceive the French,” he added.
Bilongo disagreed and called the comment “disgraceful”. “Today, I was sent back because of my color. I was born in France. I am a French Member of Parliament”he said.
Stéphane Cezournet, the head of the president’s centrist party Emmanuel Macron, said de Furnas should resign while the left-wing Nupes alliance believes he should be expelled from parliament. “The National Alarm showed its true face today. This racist insult is typical of the far right: stigmatize them based on the color of their skin, divide the French people,” she said in her statement.
The National Alarm has 89 MPs and is the second largest party in the French parliament.
