DiPape, 42, was arrested Oct. 28 at the house of the speaker of the House of Representatives after he broke into it, demanded to see Nancy Pelosi, and then hit her husband in the head with a hammer, according to the indictment.
The man accused of breaking into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and attacking her husband with a hammer is a Canadian who has been in the United States illegally 14 years after entering the country as a visitor, US authorities said today.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said it has asked San Francisco authorities to detain David DiPape once the criminal proceedings against him are complete. According to the document sent on Nov. 1, four days after his arrest, DiPape will be turned over to ICE for possible deportation to Canada after serving any jail time he may be sentenced to.

Nancy Pelosi, second in line for the US presidency, was not at her home in San Francisco when the attack occurred. The Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives had traveled to Washington.
According to prosecutors’ documents, which characterized the incident as a politically motivated attack, DiPape told officers he planned to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, interrogate her and break her knees if she lied.
82-year-old Paul Pelosi was taken to a San Francisco hospital with a brain injury, where he underwent surgery. Six days after the attack, he was discharged and returned home.
Dipape, who has been remanded in custody, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the charges (attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, elder abuse, threatening a public official). He faces 13 years to life in prison if convicted.
