An 18-year-old graduate of an Orthodox school in the Russian city of Serpukhov detonated an improvised explosive device that had exploded at the entrance of the educational institution, injuring himself and ten other students, the Moscow region authorities announced today.
Bombings and armed attacks on schools have been rare in Russia, but have increased in recent years, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to tighten gun laws.
“Today at 08:24 local time (07:24 Greek time), an 18-year-old graduate of this educational institution entered the orthodox school located next to the Vladisny Vendensky monastery in the city of Serpukhov and detonated the explosives he had brought,” the ministry explained. A spokeswoman for the commission, Olga Vrady, said the suspect, who was injured in the blast, was “being treated in an intensive care unit” and “investigators were unable to work with him”. According to her, the perpetrator “wanted to commit suicide” by detonating the explosives he brought.

According to the Tass agency and police sources, the perpetrator of the attack intended to detonate “the improvised explosive device during the morning prayer at school, but eventually fired at the entrance” of the school.
The motives of the former student of the school, where children aged 7 to 16 attend, are not known.
