In his contacts with the Chinese leadership, he assured, he also raised all the “controversial” issues – human rights, relations with Taiwan and unfair competition in trade.
He expressed the joint view of Berlin and Beijing that nuclear threats to war in Ukraine are “irresponsible and extremely dangerous” Olaf Solz from Beijing, who held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“The situation (regarding the war in Ukraine) is dangerous for the whole world – and for Europe – and here in China everyone knows that an escalation of the war through the use of tactical nuclear weapons it will have consequences for everyone. It was important to say today that the use of nuclear is excluded, and I’m glad we reached an agreement,” added the chancellor, who is under fire for choosing to become the first Western leader to visit Beijing since President Xi Jinping’s re-election as Communist Party leader.
The German chancellor said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed during their talks in Beijing that nuclear threats to war in Ukraine were “irresponsible and extremely dangerous”.
Chancellor Olaf Solz defended his decision to visit China, especially, he said, in light of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. In his contacts with the Chinese leadership, he assured, he also raised all the “controversial” issues – human rights, relations with Taiwan and unfair competition in trade.
“It was right to have these talks now (…) The visit was right and it happened at the right time. I am glad to be here today,” said Mr. Soltz after concluding his contacts in Beijing.
Climate protection, human rights, the situation in Taiwan and unfair trade competition were also on the agenda for his talks with President Xi and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. Mr. Scholz, who is accompanied on his visit by top executives of twelve large German companies, he demanded competition on equal terms for European investors and stated that specifically for the pharmaceutical company BioNTech, which is seeking to establish itself in China, promises were made that the licensing process would be accelerated. In addition, the Chinese government has allowed the German company to make its coronavirus vaccine available to foreigners living in China. BioNTech co-founder Ugur Sahin joined the chancellor’s mission today. In response to a related question, Olaf Solz stated that during his current contacts there was no discussion about Cosco’s investment in the port of Hamburg.
The chancellor, on the contrary, assured that he also raised issues that are considered controversial and on which the two countries maintain different views, such as the protection of human rights, stressing that “we must not be silent when we see violations”.
Asked why he rejected the French president’s proposal Emmanuel Macron to visit China together, Olaf Solz pointed out that this visit was already planned in the way it was, while it was necessary before smooth regular consultations were possible.
