The 73-year-old Charles, who has for years taken initiatives on environmental issues, will not himself attend COP27 which starts next week in Egypt.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today praised King Charles for his foresight in tackling climate change, at a reception the monarch hosted for politicians and businessmen ahead of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).

The 73-year-old Charles, who has for years taken initiatives on environmental issues, will not himself attend COP27 which starts next week in Egypt.

Instead, he hosted a reception for about 200 guests from around the world, including the US special envoy for climate change, John Kerry.

“His Majesty has been working to help find practical solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss for more than 50 years, long before COP1, let alone COP27,” Sunak said, praising his “insight”. King Charles.

Buckingham Palace announced last month that, following consultations with (then Prime Minister) Liz Truss’s government, it had been decided that King Charles would not attend the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference. It is recalled that in 2021, Charles delivered a speech at COP26 hosted in Glasgow.

Yesterday Thursday, a Downing Street spokesman said that if Sunak had become prime minister earlier, King Charles would likely have traveled to Egypt for COP27.

Rishi Sunak had initially decided not to attend the conference in order to focus on issues plaguing the British economy. However, after the criticism he received, he decided to reconsider and finally travel to Egypt.

“When you see the challenge ahead, it’s easy to feel discouraged. But I think the agreements we reached in Glasgow are a source of hope for the world,” said the British prime minister and stressed: “If we don’t act today, we risk leaving a more hopeless legacy to our children tomorrow.”
