Ex-athletes of the Italian rhythmic gymnastics denounced the exercise of serious psychological violence.

They are Nadia Corandini, 19, and Ana Basta, 22, who revealed that they were forced to fast, eat very little, and that when they failed to maintain a certain weight limit, they received serious insults.

Another athlete, Julia Gultarosa, added that she was “forced to undress in front of everyone” and that “they used to call her a pig”.

After these complaints, it was decided to put the Italian Academy of Rhythmic Gymnastics under commission. Every week, the athletes will talk to psychologists to determine if they are being subjected to psychological violence.

Twenty-six-year-old Alessia Maurielli, a 26-year-old Italian Olympic champion, although she did not personally receive such pressure, expressed “all her solidarity with her colleagues, who suffered and continue to suffer.”

The newspaper La Repubblica writes that already in 2018 lawsuits had been filed against coaches by parents who had realized that their children were facing psychological problems, due to the specific behaviors, which had the sole aim of securing distinctions in Italian and international competitions.

The Rome newspaper, at the same time, adds that in other cases, parents of female athletes were pressured “not to report what they knew for the good and future of their children”.
