In McCurtain County, southern Oklahoma, the violent weather killed a 90-year-old man, according to State Gov. Kevin Stitt, who declared a state of emergency in the affected areas.
Several people are reported missing, according to a local official cited by US media.
Tornadoes also hit Arkansas and Texas, where 50 homes were damaged or destroyed, according to the Lamar County Sheriff.
Noting that ten people were hospitalized, two of whom were in serious but stable condition, the sheriff’s department said in a Facebook statement that “there were no fatalities at this time.”
In Oklahoma, rescue teams are heading to the town of Idabel, population about 7,000, which appears to have been particularly hard hit, Gov. Kevin Stitt tweeted. Electric generators are brought into town.
The United States is regularly hit by tornadoes, averaging nearly 1,300 annually, with most occurring in the spring.
In December 2021, dozens of these extreme weather events wreaked havoc in five central US states, mostly in western Kentucky, and left at least 79 dead.
