In the next hours, in Catania, it is possible that other ships with immigrants and refugees, which belong to non-governmental organizations, will try to dock
The ship approached the port of Catania in Sicily last night Humanity 1, with the Italian authorities giving disembarkation permission to 144 rescued migrants and refugees, for a total of 179.
Before giving permission to disembark, the Italian authorities carried out a check to ascertain how many women, minors and in general migrants and refugees with health problems were. In the end it was decided that 35 men were not allowed to disembark.
A representative of the crew told reporters that, “if the Humanity leaves the port without all the passengers having disembarked, it will be an illegal act, because they are all refugees.”
Rome’s interior ministry insists, however, that anyone who does not meet the conditions for humanitarian aid should leave Italian territorial waters. In the next hours, in Catania, it is possible that other ships with immigrants and refugees, which belong to non-governmental organizations, will try to dock.
