“Turkey is one of the most friendly countries towards Belarus,” Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko told TRT in an interview, adding that they support each other in international organizations. “Turkey is one of the most friendly countries towards Belarus,” he said. “The Foreign Ministry [της Τουρκίας] and Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu support Belarus on all international platforms. “Similarly, we support Turkey.”
Earlier in December, the EU adopted a fifth package of sanctions against Belarus over continuing human rights abuses and Lukashenko’s instrumentalisation of migrants.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had also attempted to instrumentalize the migrants at the Greek-Turkish border. The EU has made it clear that it will not tolerate the orchestrated and politically motivated instrumentalization of the people.
“On behalf of the Belarusian people, I would like to sincerely thank Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish leadership for the attitude of the authorities and the consistency of Turkey towards Belarus,” Lukashenko said in an interview. “We reciprocate the favor (…) Any request by Recep Tayyip Erdogan is unquestionably granted by Belarus whenever possible. Turkey is doing the same.”
In fact, the President of Belarus described Turkey as a “heroic country” and its leadership as “the noblest in the world”, as he said it hosts more than 4 million refugees and that honors them.
Referring to the Turkish President, he said: “Whether or not I consider Erdogan the leader of the Muslim world, he has already become an important figure in this world.” “It determined the development course of the Turkish state and the 85 million Turks in the 21st century. He really acts like a real leader in this part of the world. “He is a personality with great influence in the Muslim world and beyond,” he said.
In a joint statement, Europe, the United States, Britain and Canada said they were “deeply concerned about the Lukashenko regime’s continuing attacks on human rights, fundamental freedoms and international law.”
The Belarusian president had angered the international community after an unprecedented “hijacking” by the country’s authorities on a Ryanair plane carrying dissident journalist Roman Protasevic.
