Americans head to the polls on Tuesday for the midterm elections. Which duels stand out and in which states
Americans go to the polls on Tuesday in midterm elections to renew all seats in the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate, as well as to elect about 30 governors.
But what are the duels that stand out in these midterm elections:
Pennsylvania
The election contest in this state may itself decide which party will have control of the Senate. In Pennsylvania, a state known for its large urban centers but also for its declining industry, a battle is underway for the seat left vacant by the Republican senator.
The surgeon Mehmet Oz, known from his presence on television, is running for the seat for the Republicans. The 60-year-old has the backing of former President Donald Trump, who still wields significant influence among the party’s voters.
Opposite him is John Fetterman, a 2.05m tall ‘giant’ who advocates for the legalization of cannabis and the strengthening of labor unions. The 50-year-old also stands out for his simple, everyday attire, mainly the shorts and tracksuits he wears, but above all the hoodies he almost never takes off.
A former mayor of a small town in Pennsylvania, the Democrat is recovering from a stroke and still has trouble speaking well. He was leading the polls for a long time, but in recent weeks his popularity has been declining.
At the moment there is no clear favorite in this race.
Georgia, act two
After grabbing the world’s attention and handing Joe Biden victory in the 2020 presidential election by just 12,000 votes, Georgia is back in the spotlight.
Two battles are taking place in that state, fueled by tens of millions of dollars, that have drawn US interest.
A former American football star, Republican Herchel Walker, is seeking to win the Senate seat held by a
Democrat pastor, Raphael Warnock. He was the first African-American senator elected in the state. The election campaign of Walker, also African-American and a Trump supporter, has recently been marred by several scandals. Despite his well-known anti-abortion stance, Walker is accused of financing the abortions of several of his ex-partners.
At the same time, there is a battle for governor: Republican Brian Kemp is trying to keep his position against Democrat Stacey Abrams, who has been trying for more than a decade to mobilize African-American voters in the state.
Arizona – Battle in the Desert
An ambivalent election contest is taking place in Arizona.
All the spotlight has turned to the battle for governor, where former journalist Kari Lake, an iconic figure of Trumpism, has a narrow lead over Democrat Katie Hobbs. The Republican nominee is still challenging the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
In the neighboring state of Nevada, there is a battle for a seat in Congress: Republican Adam Laxalt has a good chance of dethroning Kathryn Cortes Masto, the first Latin American to be in the US Senate.
“The Rust Belt”
In Ohio and Wisconsin, two Rust Belt states that are traditionally Democratic but voted for Trump because of deindustrialization, there is also a tough battle.
In Ohio, attention has been drawn to the election of state senator, a position until now held by a Republican, J. D. Vance, a former military man and author of a book about white middle-class success. Opposing him is Democrat Tim Ryan, a newcomer to the political scene.
In Wisconsin, a state that Biden narrowly won in 2020 after electing Trump in 2016, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson is fighting to keep his seat against a Democrat backed by the left wing of her party, young Mandela Barnes.
Possible surprises
In every election there are surprises.
For several weeks now, political analysts have been closely watching a battle in Iowa, where 89-year-old Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is seeking re-election against Democrat Mike Franken. The outcome of this electoral contest is increasingly difficult to predict.
Republicans are also wary of the Utah primary, where Sen. Mike Lee is tied, according to polls, with independent candidate Evan McMullin.
But they are projected to pick up seats in Oregon, New Hampshire and New York state, three states that typically vote Democratic.
