Sanctions against Russian mercenary company Wagner were announced Friday by the EU.
The group is based in Russia and, according to a Council statement, “has recruited, trained and sent private troops to conflict zones around the world to fuel violence, loot natural resources and intimidate civilians in violation of international law.” including international human rights law “.
In particular, the Council adopted a series of restrictive measures against the Wagner group, a private military entity based in Russia. The measures target the Wagner group itself and eight individuals and three entities associated with it.

People listed by the EU are involved in serious human rights violations, including torture and extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and killings, or in destabilizing activities in some of the countries in which they operate, including Donbass) and the Central African Republic. The group is also spreading its influence elsewhere, especially in the Sahel. For these reasons the group is a threat to the people in the countries where it is present, the wider region and to the European Union.
The aim of today’s decision is to limit the subversive activities of the Wagner group. It marks the EU’s strong determination to defend its interests and values ​​in its neighborhood and beyond, and to take concrete action against those who threaten international peace and security and violate international law.
The restrictive measures imposed today were agreed in the context of four different sanctions regimes: the EU global human rights sanctions regime and the sanctions regime related to the situation in Libya and Syria, as well as actions that undermine Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Finally, according to the Council Communication, listed individuals and entities will now be subject to asset freezing in the EU. In addition, listed individuals will be subject to a travel ban in the EU. In addition, persons and entities in the EU will be it is prohibited to allocate funds, either directly or indirectly, to those on the list.
