An avalanche of criticism from both the opposition and celebrities and independent media.
They caused anger in Poland the statements of the leader of the conservative nationalist ruling party “Law and Justice” (PiS), of Jaroslav Kaczynskithat excessive alcohol consumption by young women is the cause of the country’s low birth rate.
The avalanche of criticism came from both the opposition and personalities and independent media.
Speaking on Saturday in the town of Elk in northeastern Poland, the 73-year-old bachelor Kaczynski said the country’s demography suffered from, among other things, “a certain attitude of people and especially women”.
“If we see the continuation of the situation where, by the age of 25, young women drink as much as men of the same age, there will be no children. “Remember that a man, to become an alcoholic, must exceed the limit for twenty years on average (…) and a woman only for two years,” he said.
He claimed that he got this information from a doctor who told him that he “was able to cure a third of his male patients from alcoholism, but not female patients.”
Finally, he emphasized that he is not in favor of the position of women having children at a very young age, because “a woman must mature to become a mother”. “But if by the time he’s 25 he’s abusing alcohol,” “then that’s not a good prognosis in that regard.”
Kaczynski, who is touring the provinces to mobilize his party officials for the 2023 parliamentary elections, returned to the issue on Sunday, speaking from the city of Olsztyn (northeast).
“I said yesterday that young women are competing with men in drinking. This is objectively harmful. And an honest politician, if he knows about it, should talk about it, because it’s harmful.”
The Left opposition alliance announced today in Warsaw that it will file a formal complaint with the parliamentary ethics committee.
Left-wing politician Robert Beardon called the statements “disgraceful”.
Polish soccer star Robert Lewandowski’s wife – Anna Lewandowska, responded on Facebook:
“Enough is enough – I get angry when politicians unfairly blame women instead of looking at the real problems.”
Gymnast Eva Chodakowska, one of the best-known influencers in Poland, spoke of a “peak of hatred” against women.
According to the National Statistical Office, the birth rate has been declining in Poland for a few years, and their rate fell in 2020 to 1,378 (against a level of 2.1 necessary to avoid population decline).
The average birth rate in Poland in 2020 was close to 1.4 children per woman. In Germany, the rate was 1.5 and in France at 1.8.
PiS, in power since 2015, has sought to take measures against low birth rates by introducing a specific benefit of more than 100 euros per child, which starts when the couple has their second child.
According to feminist circles and the opposition, the tightening of the law that strictly limits abortions, including in cases of fetal malformation, may encourage some women to avoid becoming pregnant.
