Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has distracted governments from efforts to tackle climate change, Ukraine’s president said today Volodymyr Zelensky in his video message broadcast at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) being held in Egypt.
“Without peace there can be no effective climate change policy” he noted, highlighting the impact of the Russian invasion on global energy supplies, food prices and Ukraine’s forests.
“This Russian war has caused an energy crisis that has forced dozens of countries to restart coal-fired power generation in order to lower energy prices for their people… in order to lower prices that are rising shockingly due to deliberate actions by Russia,” Zelensky stated.
The Ukrainian president also said that the Russian invasion had caused “an acute food crisis in the world, which has hit worst those who suffer from the existing effects of climate change”, adding that “due to the war, 5 million hectares of forest land in Ukraine were destroyed in less than of six months”.
This year, for the first time, Ukraine had its own stand at a United Nations Climate Change Conference. But unlike the rest of the pavilions at COP27 — which are adorned with colorful logos, flags and images of dense vegetation — the Ukrainian stands out for its wartime gray and black color scheme.
Zelensky criticized some of the Earth’s powerful, without naming them, for being content with wishful thinking in dealing with climate change. “There are still many for whom climate change is just rhetoric or marketing … but not real action,” he said.
“They’re the ones who start wars of aggression when the planet can’t take a single shot. Global coordinated action is needed,” said the Ukrainian president.
