A Russian withdrawal from Kherson would highlight the strong advance of Ukrainian forces and reinforce the weakness of the Russian military offensive, the officials agreed in a phone call this morning. Rishi Sunak and Volodymyr Zelensky.

However, the UK prime minister and Ukraine’s president also agreed that it is only right that caution should continue until the Ukrainian flag is raised in the city.

According to Downing StreetMr Sunak praised the bravery of the Ukrainian armed forces and reaffirmed UK’s unwavering military, financial and political support.

He described Russian drone attacks on civilian areas as appalling and confirmed that the UK would continue to provide military aid. This also includes 1,000 surface-to-air missiles and more than 25,000 pieces of winter equipment for soldiers.

President Zelensky for his part referred to how British military support protects vital infrastructure and contributes to Ukrainian successes on the battlefield.

Ahead of its session G20 in Bali next week the two leaders discussed the importance of continuing coordinated international support for Ukraine.

They finally agreed that Russia should be held accountable for its actions and not be allowed to block critical shipments of Ukrainian grain and fertilizer from reaching international markets.
