Patrick Thelwell, 23, was arrested by police on Wednesday morning after the incident on the streets of York, in northern England, where the king traveled with his wife Camilla.

A student arrested in the United Kingdom yesterday for throwing eggs at King Charles III has been released but police have banned him from carrying eggs in public, British media reported today.

Patrick Thelwell, 23, was arrested by police on Wednesday morning after the incident on the streets of York, in northern England, where the king traveled with his wife Camilla.

As the king and his wife greeted the crowd, cheered on by the Britons who had gathered to welcome them, the young activist threw several eggs at Charles, but failed to hit him.

Speaking to the Mirror, Thelwell said he remained in custody until 10pm and was released on the condition that he no longer approach the king or carry eggs in public. He will still be able to buy eggs when he goes shopping, he explained to the newspaper.

Thelwell is a former Green Party candidate and activist for the environmental group Extinction Rebellion.

At the time of the incident, also showing his anti-monarchy views, he shouted that the UK was “built on the blood of slaves”. According to him, the crowd cheering the king became furious with him and “screamed”. “Some were pulling my hair, spitting on me,” he told the Mirror, claiming he has received threats against his life.

Charles, 73, became king after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September, but the official coronation ceremony will take place on May 6, 2023. Charles III remains less popular than his mother, who was adored by Britons during her 70-year reign. However, Charles’ popularity has been on the rise since he became king.
