US: Putin Probably ‘Tried and Failed’ to Test Poseidon Nuclear Torpedo

THE Vladimir Putin “attempted, but probably failed” to test the Poseidon nuclear torpedo in recent weeks, and the Russian submarine carrying the torpedoes, the K-329 Belgorodis returning to its base from the Arctic, a senior US intelligence source told CNN.

The Belgorod, the world’s largest submarine, was commissioned in July this year, and can carry six Poseidon nuclear torpedoes.

Torpedoes are nuclear and can theoretically travel unlimited distances once launched: they are remote-controlled and resemble drones in their handling.

SKAI’s analysis of the torpedo:

In 2018, when Russia’s Belgorod submarine was first announced, Vladimir Putin boasted that its Poseidon torpedoes could penetrate US defenses, calling it an “innovative” weapon.

Belgorod was located in the Arctic Sea in late September, causing alarm in NATO, with military and intelligence experts expecting Russia to test Poseidon torpedoes. But on Thursday, CNN reported that the Belgorod returned to its base without conducting any tests.

Analysts say the failure to test the torpedoes is a sign of technical difficulties, meaning sanctions against Russia may be starting to take effect.

“This can be seen as part of the bigger picture and Russia’s recent military practice, which sends bad trained and inadequately equipped troops in Ukraine,” a Western diplomat told CNN. “The Russian military industry is going through difficult times, and we can also see that Western sanctions on high-tech military goods are having an effect and should be continued.”

However, the US does not believe that any test would involve firing it nuclear mechanism. Any potential danger would come from a malfunction of the nuclear propulsion system, which could cause radioactivity hazards.

Available information states that the Poseidon nuclear torpedo is 24 meters long, has an estimated speed of 180 km, is controlled by artificial intelligence and has a range of 10,000 km.

Nightmare scenarios for Putin’s new weapon state that it could cause a “tsunami” of up to 500 meters, affecting the water with radioactivity to such an extent that it is completely unfit to support life.
