Mona Seif, the sister of British Egyptian political prisoner Alaa Abdel Fattah, whose life is in danger after seven months on hunger strike, announced today that she has formally requested a presidential pardon for his release.
“I already submitted a request in June and today I submitted a new (request) to confirm my commitment in favor of any legal avenue to settle the fate of my brother,” he tweeted, while since April Egypt has reactivated the presidential commission grace, which has been inactive for years, and has already released 766 political prisoners, according to Amnesty International.
The NGO adds, however, that during those seven months, another 1,540 Egyptians were jailed for crimes of opinion.
