According to the British Brewing and Pub Association (BBPA), rising prices on everything from raw materials to fuel are forcing businesses to pass the cost on to pub customers, with the average price of a pint rising by 8% compared to last year.
British pubs are asking for government help to keep beer prices affordable this Christmas, as rising inflation increases costs for businesses and hurts consumer spending power.
The British Brewery and Pub Association (BBPA), in a letter dated November 11 to Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, called on the government to reinstate the ‘freeze’ on beer tax in the budget announcements, expected on November 17.
“We need the beer tax ‘freeze’ reinstated to limit cost pressures on pubs and breweries and to avoid undermining critical measures to reform Liquor Tax,” BBPA chief executive Emma McClarkin said in a statement today. .
The tax freeze, which had been expected to come into effect from February, was scrapped as part of Mr Hunt’s move last month to roll back tax cuts announced by previous prime minister Liz Truss.
According to the BBPA, rising prices on everything from raw materials to fuel are forcing businesses to pass the cost on to bar customers, with the average price of a pint of beer up 8% on last year .
