Coronavirus – Vaccines on the agenda of the Summit on December 16

by

The letter of invitation to the Summit on Thursday 16 December was sent by the President of the European Council Charles Michel to the leaders of the 27 member states.

Mr. Michel emphasizes that every effort should be made to address the reluctance towards coronavirus vaccination, while noting that both the issue of energy and the external aspects of migration will be on the table.

“On Wednesday, December 15, we will meet in Brussels for the Eastern Partnership Summit. “This will be an opportunity to reaffirm the strategic importance of the Eastern Partnership, especially in the light of today’s challenges,” said Charles Michel.

The President of the European Council notes that “COVID will remain very much in the spotlight” of the leaders.

“The emergence of new variants reminds us that no one is safe until everyone is safe. More than ever, vaccination, including third doses, remains our best tool to fight the pandemic. We must make every effort to overcome the hesitation about vaccines and to combat misinformation. “Coordinating our measures, based on the best available scientific data, is crucial, especially to maintain mobility.”

Leaders will also address global cooperation and how to eliminate bottlenecks in vaccine exchange and delivery.

“We will return to our work to strengthen our collective preparedness, responsiveness and resilience to future crises,” the letter said.

“After our discussion in October, we will deal with the rise in energy prices and its impact on our citizens and businesses. Our discussion will be informed by preliminary reports on the functioning of the gas and electricity markets and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, as well as recent Commission proposals. “In this crucial issue, ensuring effective monitoring will be crucial,” said Charles Michel.

At the same time, he points out that “in terms of the external aspects of migration, we will examine all migration routes and evaluate the operational implementation of action plans with priority third countries as well as their funding.”

“In the face of increasing global instability, we have agreed that the EU must take greater responsibility for its own security. As discussed in Mrdo, we will provide guidance for an ambitious Strategic Compass, which will set a common strategic vision for the next decade. “We will also discuss how to further strengthen our close cooperation with NATO, which remains, for its member states, the foundation of their collective defense,” said the President of the European Council.

“We will also return to the situation in Belarus and the best way to deal with the hybrid attack launched by the regime with a decisive response, while we will address all the dimensions of the crisis in accordance with fundamental rights. We will also refer to the Russian military concentration along the border with Ukraine. “Any further military attack on Ukraine will have huge consequences and serious costs in response.”

“Looking forward to next year, we will prepare for the European Union – African Union Summit scheduled for Brussels on 17-18 February 2022, with the aim of creating a Prosperity and Stability Alliance based on a transformative investment package.

“Finally, at the euro summit, we will assess the economic situation as well as the latest developments related to the Banking Union and the Capital Markets Association,” he concludes.
