Xi to Biden: Taiwan issue is ‘red line’ that must not be violated

The Chinese president Xi Jinping he explained to the president of the USA Joe Bidenin their first direct meeting since 2017, that the Taiwan issue is “very central to China’s interests” and the “first red line” in bilateral relations which must not be violated.

In the meeting held in Bali, Indonesia, the first between the two leaders since Biden became president, Xi called on the US leader to translate US commitments to Beijing on Taiwan into tangible actions.

“The issue of Taiwan is very central for China’s interests, the background of the political basis of China-US relations, and the first red line that must not be violated in China-US relations,” Xi said, according to a statement carried by Xinhua news agency.

Beijing considers Taiwan to be an integral part of China. The self-ruled island’s democratically elected government rejects Beijing’s claims of sovereignty, while the United States has often been accused in recent years by China of encouraging Taiwan independence.

According to a White House statement on Monday’s talks, the US president and his Chinese counterpart exchanged views on key regional and global challenges, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“President Biden raised (with Xi) Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine and Russia’s irresponsible threats of nuclear use. “President Biden and President Xi reiterated their agreement that a nuclear war must never be fought and can never be won, and underlined their opposition to the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine,” the White House said.
