Among those banned from entering Russia is 60-year-old actor and comedian Jim Carrey.
Russia announced today that it will deny entry to 100 Canadians, including actor Jim Carrey and numerous journalists, in retaliation for sanctions imposed by Ottawa on Russian journalists and actors in October.
This decision was taken in response to the “practice of applying sanctions by the regime of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against Russian leaders, politicians, parliamentarians (…), journalists and personalities in the field of culture”, explains the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Among those banned from entering Russia is 60-year-old actor and comedian Jim Carrey.
Also on the list, along with the Hollywood star, are journalists Paul Workham of CTV and Margaret Evans of the CBC, Caroline Javier, the head of the Communications Security Establishment, as well as several Canadian figures of Ukrainian descent.
Moscow accuses them of “direct involvement in the formation of an aggressive anti-Russian policy”, according to the statement.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 1,400 persons and entities located in or originating from Russia, Belarus or Ukraine.
In October, Canada specifically imposed sanctions on Russian journalists and media outlets as well as actors deemed “complicit in disinformation” surrounding the war in Ukraine.
