The arrested person was allegedly acting on behalf of the Moroccan intelligence services
A Moroccan national was arrested Monday in Germany on suspicion of spying on supporters of a protest movement that rocked Morocco in 2016-2017.
The German police arrested Mohammed A. in the Cologne area and searched his home. The arrested person was allegedly acting on behalf of the Moroccan intelligence services, according to the Karlsruhe public prosecutor’s office.
The charges against Mohamed A. concern the period between April 2021 and March 2022; when he allegedly spied on supporters of the “Hirac” movement who live in Germany.
He was brought before a judge, who ordered his remand.
Episodic protests broke out in Morocco’s Rif region in October 2016, following the death of a fishmonger who was trying to prevent the seizure of his goods. The demonstrations have grown into a protest movement against the marginalization of the highly deprived area.
