G20: Draft agreement acknowledges impact of ‘war in Ukraine’

The world’s largest economies, including Russia, refer to the negative effects of “the war in Ukraine” in the draft final communique of the G20 summit, obtained by Reuters and AFP, which states that “most members (…) strongly condemn” the war.

This text, which has not yet been adopted by the leaders of the G20 states, mentions the term “war”, which until now has been rejected by Russia, which speaks of “a special military operation” in Ukraine.

In the final statement, the G20 countries call the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons “unacceptable” and call for the extension of the agreement on grain exports.

“There were other views and different assessments of the situation,” the draft reads.

“Accepting that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we recognize that security issues can have significant implications for the global economy,” he adds.
