For every €1 a man earns, a woman earns €0.87.
In EU women are still paid less than men for equal work. The average wage gap between gender in the EU it is 13%. This means that for every €1 a man earns, a woman earns €0.87. The progress being made is steady but very slow, as the gap has narrowed by 2.8% over the past 10 years.
This year, 15 November is European Equal Pay Day. Ahead of this symbolic day, Vice-President for Values and Transparency Ms Viera Jourova and Equality Commissioner Ms Helena Daly said: “Equal pay for equal work: this is a fundamental principle of the European Union. The injustice of the gender pay gap cannot be removed unless the structural imbalances of society are changed. For this reason the Commission has significantly stepped up its efforts for gender equality and to tackle the root causes of pay inequality. We need to empower women so they can realize their potential.
However, an important piece of the puzzle is missing: salary transparency. We call on the European Parliament and the Council to approve without fail our proposal for a directive on pay transparency.”
