Capital punishment is widespread in the Gulf region, especially in Iran and Saudi Arabia, despite protests from humanitarian organizations. In Saudi Arabia 81 people were executed in a single day in March
Seven people, including two women, were executed today in Kuwait according to the country’s authorities. These are the first executions carried out in the country since 2017, despite calls from human rights groups for clemency.
The Kuwaiti authorities said in a statement that the executions were carried out “by hanging” after they were approved by the country’s emir.
They specified that those executed were two women (one Kuwaiti citizen and one Ethiopian citizen) and five men (three Kuwaitis, one Syrian and one Pakistani).
These are the first executions in Kuwait since 2017 when authorities again executed seven people by hanging, including a member of the royal family and a woman who started a fire during a wedding ceremony that killed dozens of people.
In her announcement, international Amnesty called for an end to the executions in the Gulf country, calling them “cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment”.
“Kuwaiti authorities must immediately impose an official moratorium on executions,” said Amnesia Deputy Regional Director Amna Gelali.
TKuwait has executed dozens of people since adopting capital punishment in the mid-1960s. Most of those executed have been convicted of murder or drug trafficking.
Kuwaiti courts have previously announced the imposition of the death penalty against members of the al-Shabbah family that has ruled the country for two and a half centuries.
“Although Kuwaiti authorities have a duty to bring to justice those responsible for serious crimes, suspects must be tried under international law in trials that respect Kuwait’s international human rights commitments,” Gelali added.
Capital punishment is widespread in the Gulf region, especially in Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia executed 81 people in a single day in March, prompting international condemnation. On November 10, Riyadh announced that it had executed two Pakistani men for heroin trafficking, the first such conviction for the crime in nearly three years.
