THE Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed today a Dutch court ruling on the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, stressing that “those who ordered the attack” must now be brought to justice.
A court in The Hague today announced its ruling that flight MH17 was shot down in 2014 by a Russian-made missile fired from a farm in eastern Ukraine and that Russia had overall control of separatist forces at the time.
Three of the four suspects linked to the downing of the plane – two Russian former intelligence officers and a Ukrainian separatist leader – were convicted in absentia of manslaughter and given life sentences.
“Punishment for all Russian atrocities – both present and past – will be inevitable,” Zelensky tweeted.
Important court decision in The Hague. First sentences for the perpetrators of #MH17 downing. Holding to account masterminds is crucial too, as the feeling of impunity leads to new crimes. We must dispel this illusion. Punishment for all RF’s atrocities then & now is inevitable.

For his part, his adviser, Mykhailo Podoliak, said the court decision sent a strong message that “every war crime committed by the Russians” will be investigated and “brought to a conclusion.”
“It can be said that this is the strongest message to the whole world, including Russia itself, that every war crime committed by the Russians will be documented, investigated and brought to a conclusion. No matter how long it takes,” Podoliak told Reuters.
