“It looks like we are on a different planet,” says the excited young German tourist Haiko, who is enjoying the nightlife in Madrid with three friends. At a time when a number of Christmas markets and cultural events are being canceled in Germany due to a pandemic, the young German and his company are visiting clubs, bars and restaurants in the Spanish capital, where there are virtually no restrictions. The malls are full, the queues outside the nightclubs are long, despite the low temperatures.
And yet in Madrid, an outbreak of cases has been recorded for weeks. Nevertheless, the party continues. Unvaccinated can enter almost anywhere without a test or certificate. In the rest of the country, however, the principles are stricter and the rules in force are stricter. In the Balearic Islands, for example, a certificate of vaccination or illness is required to enter mass events, hospitals and hospitality facilities.
In 90% the percentage of fully vaccinated
In Spain, life goes on normally without any restrictions. Concerts with thousands of spectators, as well as full football stadiums, have been possible for a long time. In Madrid, as well as in cities such as Alicante and Barcelona, where a certificate of vaccination or illness is required, the inseparable prevails in clubs, restaurants and shopping malls.
Most Spaniards seem to be optimistic about the pandemic from the high rate of full vaccination, which now exceeds 90%. Vaccination for all ages 5-11 starts today. In comparison, in Germany the percentage of fully vaccinated is around 70%. In addition, in Spain, vaccination mobilizations are an unknown phenomenon. The Spaniards are enjoying their lives, but they remain careful. On the street they mostly wear protective masks, even though they are not mandatory.
Star the president of the regional government
Is Spain a country without cases, in fact? No. In the last 7 days the recorded cases jumped from just 18 in mid-October to 164 a few days ago. In the capital, Madrid, the cases of the last seven days per 100,000 inhabitants were around 98. Based on these data, Spain is clearly in a much better position than many other European countries. In Germany, for example, the positivity index reaches 390 cases. According to the Spanish authorities, the situation in the Intensive Care Units of the hospitals is considered relaxed, while at the same time the number of deaths due to coronavirus-related causes reached 150 last week.
Crowded restaurants, malls and concert halls bring smiles of satisfaction to all those employed in the restaurant. The big winner, however, is, according to many Spanish media, 43-year-old Isabel Dias Agiosso. The Conservative president of the regional government in Madrid has the slogan “Freedom or Communism” and is now more popular than stars of Spanish cinema or sports. The RTVE TV program even describes her as the “queen of catering” and even “holy” because she allowed the world to go out without substantial restrictions, preventing many padlocks in the field of catering and entertainment. Just last Monday, Isabel Dia Agiuso said that “restrictions only cause chaos, while we in Madrid seek a return to everyday life.” It is therefore self-evident that as soon as the 43-year-old politician appears somewhere in public, he is applauded by employees in cafes, bars and nightclubs.
