A fire broke out today at the Hong Kong World Trade Center, trapping about 150 people on its roof and injuring 13 people before firefighters put it out, police and firefighters said.
The 39-storey World Trade Center houses restaurants, offices and shops in the bustling Cozway Bay shopping district.
The fire broke out at noon (local time) in a common room in the shopping center of the building on its lower floors, media reported, before it spread to the bamboo scaffolding that invests its exterior.
City officials said firefighters battled the blaze with two high-pressure hoses and used telescopic ladders and breathing apparatus to rescue those trapped.
Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing 13 protesters by truck.
“The fire was extinguished at 16:30 (local time, 10:30 Greek time),” the fire department told Reuters.
Earlier, customers of the mall and office workers left the building en masse as smoke rose from it and police blocked traffic on major neighboring streets.
About 100 people were evacuated from a restaurant to the top 39th floor when a fire broke out and smoke filled the room, police said, according to RTHK.
The causes of the fire have not been known so far.
